  HOW TO GET ASSIGNMENTS

Due to the large number of games each week, several assignors share the assigning load:  See Contacts for the assignor in your area.

How to Get NCSL and WAGS Assignments

The key to getting the type of assignments you want is the NCSL/WAGS Referee Availability sheet.  If you have not provided an availability sheet, send us the AVAILABILITY SHEET you received in the mail. You may email, mail or fax it to us.  Be very clear on your preferences, and remember that the more flexible you are, the better mix of games we can come up with for you.  There are three basic ways for you to get assignments:

1.  If you have a good handle on your personal schedule and do not have to work around a team, we can preassign you for the entire season or for as much of it as you want.

2.  If you are associated with a team and want to be assigned around the team's schedule, send us your schedule after you get it. We will still have many good games available, but understand that having to fit you around your team's schedule may limit the type and number of games we can find for you.

3.  If your schedule is uncertain and you'd like to work week to week, that's fine.  Call us each week-- and the earlier in the week you call, the better choices you will have.

If you tell us you will be available on a certain Sunday, we expect you to be available on that Sunday.  Please don't tell us you've taken other games -- this is not fair to us or to the teams that are relying on having referees for their games.

  • We can't promise you Saturday games since Saturdays are largely make-up dates, meaning we don't know how many games we'll have.
  • We also understand that "life happens" and that sometimes you have to give back games.  The sooner you notify us, the more likely we are to be able to find a replacement for you.  If you call us Friday or Saturday night and say you can't do your games, those games may go uncovered.

Referees must be 16 years old to center NCSL and WAGS games.  We assign younger referees as ARs with veteran referees so they can get the necessary experience to step into the center when it is time.  This has been policy for many years for two reasons:

While there are some 14- or 15-year-olds who can do a credible job of centering travel games, the great majority don't have the experience or maturity to handle these more competitive games.

Referees for the younger age groups in travel soccer are as much teachers as they are referees; maturity is a very important element when reffing the younger age groups.
